Cypress Island Preserve

Cypress Island Preserve is 9,500 acres of protected bottomland hardwood forest and cypress-tupelo swamp. The Visitor Center, opened in 2010, is an excellent place to learn about the unique ecosystem of Cypress Island and the various conservation projects that the Nature Conservancy is currently working on. On this preserve there are three main trails:

  • Levee Trail (2.5 miles one-way)
  • Visitor Center Boardwalk (0.2 mile loop)
  • Restoration Area Nature Trail (0.5 mile loop)

In addition to parking at the Visitor Center, a small parking area is also located at the southwest end of Lake Martin. An additional parking area is located at the northern end of the lake from Rookery Road, where hikers can access the north end of the walking levee trail through the adjacent gate.
